Dice have existed for thousands of years and it is the oldest form of gambling. Many evidences suggest that dice and any form of dice games existed during the early civilizations. Even the Greeks and Romans have played dice. The bible states that the Roman soldiers, during the crucifixion of Christ, have played dice to decide who could keep His clothing.
The ancient dice were usually made of bones. Other materials like marble, agate, onyx, bronze, porcelain and alabaster were also used to make dice. Ancient tribes have also played dice using any material available in their environment. These include seeds, deer horn, animal teeth, pottery, seashells, pebbles and others. The modern square dice had counterparts found in Maiden Castle in Britain. There were also findings in Rome that dated during 900 B.C.
There were countless occurrences of people using loaded dice to cheat. Loaded dice are deliberately altered in order for it to land on a specific side facing up. A cheater may load dice in different ways. Some use weights on one side of he dice, while some put mercury at the hollowed center so when the table is tapped the mercury inside the dice will transfer to the other cavity on the other side.
There are some gamblers who are fond of blowing on the dice or rubbing it with their hands before throwing them on the table. It is possible that the gambler might use a type of loaded dice; either with some wax or a type of substance that would easily melt upon infliction of some warmth. Blowing or rubbing on the dice would cause the substance to melt immediately and the weight will be directed to the desired side.
The dice being used today, particularly in casinos, are non-loaded dice since, modern dice are made of translucent acrylic, so it is very difficult to modify. The standard dice should have an accurate weight based on the standards specifically set for dice games in casinos.
